Fried Chicken Wangs and Thangs: NBC's Black History Month Menu

On February 4, Questlove, drummer extraordinaire of the incomparable hip hop band The Roots distributed through Twitter a picture of NBC's menu in celebration of Black History Month.

Many people took offense to the menu, claiming it was racist, I assume because they believed it was a stereotype that all black people eat fried chicken, greens and black eyed peas. I imagine the outrage that many corporate blacks felt about the menu: "How dare they have a menu that includes succulent fried chicken as a celebration of Black History Month. All they needed to add was watermelon and macaroni and cheese and the stereotype would be complete. What an insult."

This is what I would have done if I worked at NBC and saw that menu: I would have ordered 4 fried chicken wangs, greens and some cornbread. I would have returned to my desk, crumpled the cornbread into the greens to soak up the pot liquor. I then would have taken a couple of bits of my crispy fried chicken wangs and as I was eating I would have called up H.R. to complain. I'm not ashamed. I'm a Negro and as such, I do not pass up the opportunity for fried chicken or fried fish.

...that's my baby! Always eat the chicken first--then complain.

I know this post is old, but what's most funny is that the woman who came up with the menu was a black woman. They let her pick whatever she wanted and she made a menu based on what she cooks for her family and friends.

I think we the coloured have a lot of over-sensitive kin.

All that aside, I suddenly wanna call my mom and ask her to make me some fried chicken and baked mac n cheese.
